What this set actually is
The tote is the accessory that grew out of the American mahjong revival. A hard case protects a set well but looks like equipment; a padded tote carries the same set to a friend’s house and looks like something you would carry anyway.
What makes a tote a mahjong bag rather than a handbag is the inside: padded dividers or separate pouches for the tiles, a long compartment for racks and pushers, and a flat pocket for the card. Without those the tiles rub against each other in transit, which is what chips them.
Measure before ordering. American racks are the longest item in the bag, and a tote that fits a Chinese set may not take them. If the listing does not give inner dimensions, assume it is a handbag with a mahjong print and look elsewhere.
What sets it apart
- Carries tiles, four racks, the card and a rolled mat in one bag
- Padding and dividers protect tile corners better than a loose shopping bag
- The current favourite of American mahjong groups, which is why it is searched as much as racks
Who should buy it
Players who carry their set to a weekly game and want it to look like a bag, not a toolbox.
