Buying a mahjong set in the UK: what is different and what to check

Mahjong is growing in the UK the way it has in the US, but the shops have not caught up: a handful of games retailers carry one or two sets, and most of what British players own came from AliExpress, eBay or a relative’s loft. This guide covers how buying from AliExpress works for a UK address, which variants UK clubs play, and the set details that matter.

Where UK players buy

  • AliExpress: the widest choice by far, from the factories that make every set sold anywhere. Delivery to the UK is typically 7 to 15 working days on the standard options, faster on sets stocked in European warehouses. This is where our buttons go.
  • Amazon UK: a narrow range at a mark-up, with the advantage of fast delivery and easy returns. We do not link to it because we do not have a UK Associates account, so our Amazon button is hidden for UK visitors.
  • Specialist UK games shops and Chinatown shops in London, Manchester and Birmingham: a few Chinese sets, useful if you want to handle a size 36 before buying.
  • eBay and charity shops: vintage bakelite and bone sets, often incomplete. Check the tile count against the game you want to play before bidding.

VAT and import charges on an AliExpress order

Since 2021 there has been no VAT-free threshold for goods posted to the UK. For orders up to £135, AliExpress charges UK VAT at checkout and nothing more is due on delivery. Above £135, VAT and any duty are collected by the courier before delivery, usually with a handling fee of around £8 to £12 on top. Board games and mahjong sets carry no customs duty, so the charge is 20% VAT plus the fee.

In practice: a set under £135 arrives with no surprises, a set or table above it costs about a fifth more than the checkout price plus the courier’s fee. The government has consulted on changing the low-value rules, so if you are ordering an automatic table check the current position first.

Which mahjong UK clubs play

Most UK clubs play Chinese rules, usually Hong Kong style or a British variant of it, and many of the newer social groups that have sprung up since 2024 play Riichi, which has an active UK tournament scene. American mahjong, the rack-and-card game that dominates in the US, is rare in Britain and mostly played by expatriates. That changes the shopping list: a Chinese 144-tile set covers the great majority of UK tables, and a Riichi set covers the rest.

Before buying, ask the group you intend to join what they play. A 166-tile American set with racks is the wrong purchase for almost every UK club, and the sets most heavily promoted to American buyers are exactly that.

Sizes for British tables

  • Size 36 Chinese tiles fit a standard 34-inch (86 cm) card table or any dining table. Size 38 and 40, the usual sizes for jade-style gift sets, need a surface at least 90 cm square.
  • Riichi tiles are 26 mm and fit anywhere, including a 70 cm mat for a flat or a pub table.
  • If the group plays on a pub or café table, a 70 or 80 cm rubber mat stops the noise and the sliding and fits in a tote bag.

Checking a listing for a UK order

  • Ship-to country set to United Kingdom before you compare delivery options; stock in a European warehouse is sometimes shown only then.
  • Tile count and size in millimetres, not “standard” or “large”.
  • Plug and voltage for automatic tables: UK listings should say 220–240 V with a UK or EU plug; a US-spec 110 V table will not work.
  • Weight: a size 38 acrylic set is 6 to 8 kg and will come by courier rather than post, which is fine but affects the fee if it is over £135.

The sets to start with

  • Chinese 144-tile set, size 36, melamine, engraved: the right first set for almost every UK club.
  • Riichi set with red fives and point sticks: for the Japanese-rules groups and for anyone who met the game online.
  • Jade-style acrylic set: the gift option. Measure the table first.
  • Chinese mini travel set: for a flat with no spare table, or for the train to a club night.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a mahjong set from AliExpress in the UK?

Yes. AliExpress ships to the UK, charges UK VAT at checkout on orders up to £135, and delivers in roughly one to three weeks depending on the shipping option. Larger orders have VAT and a courier handling fee collected on delivery.

What mahjong set do UK clubs use?

Mostly Chinese 144-tile sets in size 36, since the majority of UK clubs play Hong Kong or British rules. Riichi groups use 136-tile Japanese sets. American 166-tile sets with racks are rarely used in the UK.

Is there customs duty on mahjong sets in the UK?

No duty, but VAT at 20% applies. Up to £135 it is charged at checkout; above that the courier collects it, plus a handling fee, before delivery.
